Newsletter 38: 22.07.10

Dear Parents

The last newsletter of the year – I can’t believe the year has passed so quickly. I would like to thank all parents and carers for the support you give to your children and to the school. This has not been an easy year in many ways but the children have never failed to brighten up our days and keep us going!

School Improvement Strategy Group

We had our second Local Authority monitoring meeting this week. They were very pleased with the progress we had made towards the actions identified for June and July. They feel the school is in a strong position moving forward to the new term. It is a very positive end to the year!

Please note the new Nursery opening times:

8.45-11.45 am

12.30-3.30 pm.

Communication

In the autumn term we will be asking parents for their e-mail addresses so that we can e-mail newsletters instead of relying on sending them home. Do not worry if you don’t have an e-mail address. We will keep a list of those families who require a paper copy of the newsletters. Hopefully this will be more reliable and will save a few trees and a few pounds!

The Holiday Cruise

There will be a holiday club for children from Wednesday 1st to Friday 3rd September from 10.00 til 12.15 at St Mary’s Church. Lots of fun activities!

Summer Reading Challenge: The Space Hop!

The summer Reading Challenge runs all the way through the holidays. Visit your local library for more details. The challenge is for your child to read 6 books of their choice during the holidays. Last year 6 of our children took part. Can we make it more this year??

SMSA’s Award

This week the awards go to Zoe Palmer and Louis Hague. Thank you for your good behaviour.

Merits

Well done to all the children who received merit awards this morning.

100% Attendance Awards

Well done to the 42 children who received 100% attendance certificates for this term and especially to the 5 children who achieved 100% for the year!

I would especially like to thank all the staff for their hard work and energy these past few months. Mrs Stansfield, Mrs McCaffrey, Miss Parkes and Mr Hutchinson leave us today. We thank them for their work and commitment to ‘The Ellis’ and wish them well for the future.

I hope you have a happy and safe holiday.

God Bless

Dear Parents

Low Carbon Day 13.7.10

Schools across the country including our own are participating in a Schools Low carbon Day. This is an exciting opportunity to raise awareness about climate change and to change all of our behaviour to reduce our impact on the environment.

We have set aside a morning to teach our children about climate change, and to ask every family to pledge to do something to cut their carbon emissions.

Low Carbon Day is being organised by Mothers Against Climate Change, a charitable organisation dedicated to raising awareness about climate change and persuading individuals to change their behaviour to reduce carbon emissions. Their website is www.cooltheworld.com.

Calculate your carbon footprint

We are asking all parents to calculate their carbon footprint before the 13th July. The easiest way to do this is by visiting www.cooltheworld.com/carboncalculator.php.

If you do not have internet access you can request a form to enable you to work out your carbon footprint ton paper.

Pledge to do something to cut your emissions

Parents across the country are being asked to pledge to do something to cut their carbon footprint. If you would like to participate please do something (see the attached list for ideas) to cut your emissions and tell your child what you are doing.

Offsetting

If you want you can also offset some or all of the carbon emissions which you cannot cut. For more information visit www.cooltheworld.com.

Yours sincerely

Mrs P Randall

How can I cut my carbon footprint? Ideas for pledges.

Cut your transport emissions

  • Don’t fly unless you really have to for 12 months. If this is not possible, try and fly less.
  • Go to school by bus, share a car or walk.
  • Walk / cycle journeys of less than 2 miles.
  • Don’t use the car for one day a week for three months.
  • Get rid of that second or even third car.
  • Downsize your car to a smaller engine.
  • Switch your vehicle to LPG.
  • Drive smarter – pump up the tyres and keep your rpm.

Cut your domestic emissions

  • Sort out your insulation and switch to low energy light bulbs.
  • Turn the thermostat down, turn the air con off.
  • Turn off the lights and avoid using standby on the TV or the computer.
  • Recycle and compost anything that can be composted.
  • Invest in energy efficient appliances (highest energy rating).
  • Invest in an induction hob.
  • Switch to a green energy tariff (see www.cooltheworld.com) for more information.
  • Generate your own renewable energy – install solar or wind or geothermal.
  • Don’t buy things that you don’t need – all those gadgets, toys, t-shirts and other junk that gets used for a day and then clutters up the place for years.
  • Invest in a smart meter. Knowledge is power.
  • Don’t waste food. Eat seasonal locally sourced food where possible.

Did you know?

  • The level of emissions produced by a family of four flying for four hours = the level of emissions produced by the average family home in four months.
  • A large, greater than 2.0 litre engine, emits 40% more CO2 per mile than a car with an engine size of 1.6 litres or lower.
  • More than 30% of the trips made by cars in Europe are for less than 2 miles and 50% for less than 3 miles.
  • It only costs around 10% more to source your electricity from 100% renewable sources. Follow this link http://www.greenelectricity.org/ to find suppliers in your area.

Unbelievably, here we are again at the last half term of the year. Where does time go?

Dear Parents

Section 48 Inspection

The inspection on Wednesday went very well. The inspector was very impressed by the children and how warmly they spoke about their school.

Car Parking

There was an incident recently when a parent and child were almost knocked down by a car reversing on the pavement! Apparently parents with push chairs have to walk on the road in order to get past cars that are parked on the kerb. Please park thoughtfully. We do not want any accidents!

Healthy Eating Event

Next Friday, ‘Expochef’ will be in school tempting us with their recipes for healthy lunches. They will be making Vegetable casserole, homemade vegetable burgers, banana and pineapple smoothies and perfect salad! Some of the children will be tasting the food but if you specifically don’t want your child to be a taster, please let the Office know.

Election Day

The Nursery will be closed next Thursday 6th May, for the elections. Main school is open that day.

Photographs

Class photos will be taken on Wednesday 26th May.

School Council

The School Council has been monitoring behaviour in the hall at lunchtimes and has launched a poster competition in school. At this week’s meeting the Council said they would like to invite parents to enter as well. They asked if this note could be put on the Newsletter:

It would be very kind if parents would take part in our lunchtime behaviour poster competition. A4 paper. Closing date 17th May 2010. Remember – KEEP IT POSITIVE.

By that the children mean that statements must not begin with ‘Don’t’ This is because we are trying to focus on the type of behaviour we DO want, such as quiet voices, lining up sensibly, good manners etc. I hope you will support the children and have a go! It is so good to see the children taking responsibility in this way.

Reminders

Children are not allowed on the Tyre Park before or after school.

Trainers are not suitable indoor footwear and must not be worn as indoor shoes.

Children must not do handstands out on the field or in the playground.

The children are aware of these rules and I would ask if you would support us by reminding the children of them. Thank you.

Intruders

Reports have been made that youths are coming into the school grounds in the evening, drinking. The Police have been made aware. If you see anyone, please let us know as we may be able to identify them on CCTV footage. Thank you.

Headteacher’s Award

The award goes to the whole school for impressing the Inspector and making him feel so welcome in our school.

Dear Parents

It was good to see all the children back at school after the holidays. I think only 3 children were affected by the Volcano and have not yet returned to school.

Section 48 Inspection

Next Wednesday, we have another inspection. This one judges how effective we are as an Anglican school. Thank you for your responses to the questionnaire. I was very encouraged by the positive comments you made.

Missing Clothes

Unfortunately it seems that several items of clothing have gone missing recently.

Y5. Liberty Wilding’s PE kit – in a red PE bag, all named (bag and kit!)

Y4. Leah Skelding’s fleece: size 9/11, named but the name could have faded.

Y1. Jennifer Pettinger’s jumpers (2 – both named in red pen)

Y1 Dylan Hawes’ brand new school coat, also named.

Please take care that your child brings home their own clothes and PE kit. If you have any items of clothing that do not belong to your child, please return them as soon as possible.

Head Lice

We can buy ‘Nitty Gritty’ Nit Combs at cost price and charge parents the same. Combing is a very effective way of keeping lice at bay. Please enquire at the Office.

Car Park

Please note: children must not be allowed to walk across the school driveway. Delivery vans can be entering school before 9.00am. If your child walks into school they must use the paths. Also, one child was seen running across the driveway from a car this week. Please do not use the front of school or the staff car park. This rule is in place to ensure your child’s safety!

Please note that the gates will be closed from around 8.50 am. If you need to come into school eg. in an emergency, please note that the gates are not locked, only closed.

Lining up

Please can you ensure your child lines up on the playground in the morning. Year 1 and 2 children tend to come straight into school but especially now that the weather is improving, they should be lining up on the playground. Thank you.

For Sale

A parent has asked me to ask if anyone would like to buy a Jack Russell puppy. 9 weeks old, male, black with white toes. Please enquire at the Office.

Healthy Eating Event

On Thursday May 6th we will be holding a Healthy Eating Event. ‘Expochef’ will be coming into school to cook 4 healthy recipes along with the children’s help. The chef will then stay in school over lunchtime to chat to the children about healthy lunch box choices.

Headteacher’s Award

The award goes to Year 1 for how well they have behaved for Mrs McCaffrey while Mrs Freeman has been away from school. Thank you and well done!

SMSA’s Awards

The awards go to Alex Barker and Jennifer Pettinger. Thank you for your good behaviour.

Attendance Award

Well done to Years 3 and 6 who tied for the highest attending class last term.

Sam goes to Year 1 this week, with 100% attendance. What a good start!

God Bless

Dear Parents

I hope you enjoyed the half term break. It is good to have a little more light at the end of each day! Unfortunately there has been a lot of water on the playground this week, due not only to the thawing ice and the rain, but also to a drainage problem which washed quite a bit of mud down the MUGA steps and on to the playground.

E-Safety

Just to remind you that Carol Booth will be presenting an e-safety awareness session for parents on Wednesday 3rd March at 2.15pm in the hall. This issue is relevant to all age groups. Mrs Booth will also present to Year 6 at 1pm that day. Please come along if you are able.

Box Tops

Please can you send in any remaining box tops by Friday 19th March.  This is the cut-off date.

World Book Day

Dear Parents

Sport Relief

We are supporting Sport Relief again this year and would like to involve parents and children (as well as staff) in a mile run/jog/walk. The event will take place on Thursday 18th March straight after school. The entrance fee is 50p per athlete. We look forward to seeing you and your child on the day. Thanks to Mrs Howarth and Mrs Brinkley for organising the run.

Missing Cornet (Y4)

Cornet number 0906044 is missing. Please check that your child’s cornet is the correct number. Thank you.

E-Safety Awareness

Thank you for your interest in this very important issue. The majority of replies were in favour of an afternoon session so we have arranged for it to take place on Wednesday 3rd March at 2.15pm. We asked for some leaflets to send out to parents who are unable to attend.

Mrs Booth will also visit the school to speak to our Year 6 children on e-safety and personal information.

Choice Time

After the half term we will be changing the way we run Choice Time. Currently it is no more than an opportunity for children to bring a ‘toy’ to play with. To make this session more structured and educational the children will be offered a variety of activities and they will be able to sign up for their choice at the beginning of the week. The children will also be in mixed age groups which will be very valuable for them all. As part of our behaviour management system children can lose Choice Time if their behaviour is unacceptable. Improving the quality of Choice Time will mean children will make more of an effort not to lose it. The children will therefore no longer need to bring a toy on Fridays. Thank you.

Half term holiday.

School closes today and re-opens on Monday 22nd February.

Headteacher’s Award

The award goes to Year 4 for their enthusiasm in maths this week. Well done and keep it up!

Questionnaires

Many thanks for completing the questionnaires about school. Your responses have been very encouraging indeed. We will collate the results and let you know the outcomes and the action we will take to address the issues you have raised.

Behaviour

Recently there have been some incidents of unacceptable behaviour in school. Children have been disrespectful to staff, answering them back and adopting an aggressive tone of voice. On Monday we will begin the day with a special assembly and then do some follow-up work around the Golden Rules. Please discuss the Golden Rules with your child and remind your child of our expectations. Thank you for your support.

Netball

Well done to our Netball team who took part in a tournament at Wombwell High school this week. They did not win, but they worked together really well, showed great team spirit and had a thoroughly good time!

Healthy Lifestyle

As you know we are committed to the development of healthy lifestyles by all our children. Please can you ensure that your child brings a bottle of water to keep themselves hydrated while they are in school. It is important that children replace the water they lose from their bodies through breathing, sweating and going to the toilet. We find that children do get used to drinking water if we encourage it from a young age. Research states that juices and soft drinks can interfere with children’s appetite so they may not get all the nutrients they need.

Half term holiday.

School closes next Friday, 12th February and re-opens on Monday 22nd February.

Dear Parents

Hope for Haiti

Thank you for your contributions to the appeal for Haiti. The news is devastating but we pray for hope in that dreadful situation. Even though we see it on the news it is so far removed from the experience of our children that it is difficult for them to understand. We will keep the appeal open and if anyone wants to contribute, please send your contributions into school. The children will be praying for the people, especially the children, and putting prayers on hearts on the tree in the foyer. Thank you.

Year 1

Unfortunately one of our regular helpers is no longer able to come into school. If anyone has any time to spare and would like to come in to give the children some extra reading practice, please contact Mrs McCaffrey, Mrs Freeman or Mrs Law. Thank you.

Please ensure that your child has a pair of pumps or sensible slippers to wear inside school. Thank you.

Dear Parents

Well at last we have managed to get back to normal (whatever that is!) Many thanks to all of you for your support during the bad weather. A special thank you to Mr Allott for helping Bill to clear the Nursery playground. The children were desperate for some fresh air and they were so pleased to be able to have a run round and let some steam off!

Safe use of the Internet

Please can I bring to your attention the issue of safe use of the Internet. We will be looking further into this at school as it is of great importance and we feel that children and parents need to be fully aware of the issues.

For example, did you know…

For a child at our school to have a ‘Facebook’ account they would have to register a false date of birth!  (Facebook is blocked in schools)

There are several ‘Kids’ search engines which only allow child-appropriate sites to come up. (Google does not have a filter of this kind so a child can type in a word and get anything and everything imaginable!)

We will be hopefully offering parents an opportunity to gain more information about safe use of the Internet later in the term. In the meantime, if you have any concerns, please let us know. Please encourage your child to tell you if anything upsetting or inappropriate comes up on their computer or to their e-mail accounts.

Disability Discrimination Act

You will also be receiving a letter and questionnaire regarding disability. The letter is self explanatory but if you have any questions about it please contact school. Thank you.

School Meals Supervisory Assistant

We have a vacancy for a full time SMSA. If you are interested, please contact the office. All applicants will be subject to satisfactory CRB clearance.

Milk Money

Please note that milk money is now due. £8 will pay for your child to be offered a carton of semi-skimmed milk each day until Easter.

The Captain’s Table

As a reward for good behaviour at lunchtime, one child from each class will be selected to eat at ‘The Captain’s Table’ fortnightly, on a Friday. They will have a 3-course meal at a separate table which will be set with a tablecloth. A senior member of staff will be at the table. Their meal will be made and served separately. We hope that this will be a great incentive and spur children on to even better behaviour at lunchtime. This is open to all children and if children want to eat their packed lunch at The Captain’s Table that is fine. They will be offered a starter and a sweet to accompany their packed lunch.

Seated at The Captain’s Table this week were Ava Bloomfield, Mollie Whitham, Katie Cairns, Isabelle Gilbert, Phoebe Biggin, Finlay Beecroft, Louen Davis and Brett Embleton.

Headteacher’s Award

The award goes to Foundation 2 this week. The new children have settled down really well and the older children have been a great help to Mrs Pollard and Mrs Beevers. What a good start!

SMSA Award

Well done to Liberty Wilding and Callum Whelan.

National, Barnsley and South Yorkshire PE and School Sport Survey

In the above survey, schools were asked to submit data regarding such as the number of hours of PE and sport the children have, the number of children taking part in competitions and so on.

From the results, we were above the Barnsley and National averages in all but one area! That is fantastic! Our children are obviously adopting a healthy lifestyle! Well done to everyone and especially to Mrs Howarth, our PE Co-ordinator.

 Dear Parents

Anti-Bullying Week

Next week is Anti-Bullying Week. During the week the children will be looking at all aspects of the subject – what bullying is, how we deal with it, victims, bullies, bystanders and most importantly we will be reinforcing the message that children must TELL if they witness bullying or are being bullied themselves. The official Anti-Bullying colour is blue and so on Monday, we will start the week with a ‘Wear It Blue’ day. The children may wear as much blue as they can (jeans included). On Friday, we will be releasing blue balloons. The theme of National Anti-Bullying Week is cyber bullying, which is becoming more and more of a problem in our digital world. Russ, our ICT technician, will be speaking to the children about this in an assembly on cyber bullying. Please ask your child about what they are doing this week and what they have learned.

On Friday there will be a Coffee Afternoon in the hall from 2.30pm. Parents may collect their child/ren and take them in with them. Come along for a coffee and a chat!

Breakfast Club

There still seems to be some misunderstanding regarding Breakfast Club. To enable the staff to begin their classroom duties at 8.45am, the latest time children can be brought to Breakfast Club is 8.30am. Breakfast Club starts at 8.10am so we would ask parents please not to bring children before that time. Thank you.

Operation Christmas Child

Boxes must be in by next Monday (16th) please. Thank you for your support!

Behaviour

We are very proud of the behaviour of the vast majority of our children and to highlight good behaviour we are now monitoring the behaviour of each class weekly. The data we are collecting includes the number of ‘Always’ children, incidents of the Hands and Feet Rule being broken, number of disrupted lessons. The children in each class will consider their behaviour, how it has improved or why it hasn’t in some aspects and will endeavour to improve week on week. Last week, the whole of Year 2 were on green all week and were therefore all ‘Always’ children. Well done to all of you – can you keep it up? Can another class equal your record?

Dear Parents

Photographs

Well done to the parents who spotted the deliberate (?) mistake last week. The date for Individual Photographs is Tuesday 20th October. Family photos with toddlers and babies will be taken from approx 8.30am.

Two more dates (let’s hope I get these right!)

Wear it Pink Day, our annual fund raiser for Breast Cancer, will be on Friday 23rd October. Who will wow us this year?

Children in Need Fun Day. Friday 20th November. This will be a day of fun and fund-raising and will be our harvest focus, ‘Children Helping Children’. We will be having a ‘Pyjama’ and ‘Bring your Teddy to School’ Day. The PTFA will be holding a Coffee Afternoon that day as part of the fun. More details later.

Walk to School

We will be starting Walk to School again on Monday. The same system as last time – if a child walks all or part of the way to school for the next two weeks they get a ticket that goes into a draw for a T-shirt. The winning ticket will be drawn in assembly on Friday 23rd October. All of the tickets will then be placed into Barnsley’s main draw for the chance of winning a bike.

Safeguarding

Safeguarding (Child Protection) is very high on our agenda, as always, and we need to inform you of the policies we have in place to safeguard our children. Please look at the following policies on the school website and let us know any comments you may have regarding them:

Safeguarding Policy (Draft)

Behaviour

Anti-bullying

Mrs Fahy and I will be attending a two-day training course, in November, to ensure that we are trained to the required standards in Safeguarding. From the policy you will note that I am the Designated Safeguarding Officer for school and Mrs Fahy is the Deputy Safeguarding Officer. Mrs Jean Horner, our Chair of Governors, is the Designated Governor for Safeguarding.

Coffee Morning for Bluebell Wood

There will be a Coffee Morning at the Fiddlers Inn on Tuesday 13th October in aid of Bluebell Wood. 10.30-12.00

Operation Christmas Child

We will be taking part in this appeal again this year so if you would like to save any shoeboxes you may have we will be sending out the leaflets when we receive them. Thank you.

Dinner Ladies Awards

Well done to Jaden Skelding and Louen Davis, who received the Dinner Ladies awards this week.

SAM

The attendance award this week goes jointly to Foundation 2 and Year 3 both with 100 % attendance. Well done!

Headteacher’s Award

I hope you have a good weekend. Only two weeks left before the half-term!

God bless

Dear Parents

Children’s Book Week

Next week is Children’s Book Week. The children will be taking part in lots of extra book-related activities during the day in school and we will be having a ‘Dress as a Book Character’ day on Friday 9th October (no fine this time) As before, if the children want to dress as a book character they can take part but we need the book as well as the costume please!

Reading is a wonderful way of spending time with your child and can be a door to so many other skills.

Relief Cleaner

If anyone would like to be on our list as a relief cleaner, please contact Mrs Rodgers in the office. It would be on an ‘as and when’ basis and would be for no more than three hours after school time.

Date for your diary

Tuesday 20th October – individual photographs.

Foundation 1 Parents Consultations. Mrs Tonkinson will be available on Tuesday 20th October 3.30-5.30 and on Wednesday 21st October during morning and afternoon sessions and from 3.30-5.30

Gardening Club

Mrs Jones, one of our dinner ladies and Mrs Dorlin, a member of the PTFA are starting a gardening Club next Thursday for KS1 children.  It will finish at 4.15pm.

Line Dancing

If any Year 1 or Year 2 children would like to join the Line Dancing after school club we have a few spaces left.

Behaviour

As you know, on the whole, our children’s behaviour is exemplary. However, staff are reporting incidents of violence that are occurring on the playground. In PSHCE lessons the children learn how to deal with their feelings and emotions and how to think of the consequences of their actions both for the other person and for themselves. I will be keeping a note of incidents of violence as continued violent behaviour can and will, lead to exclusion. We see so much violence in the media these days, especially among children, that we must do all we can to equip our children to deal with their emotions in safe and acceptable ways and encourage peaceful resolution to conflict. I am confident that you will support us by reinforcing this message. Thank you.

Scheme of Aid (Free School Meals)

Children whose parents are in receipt of Income Support, Income Based Job Seeker’s Allowance or Income Related Employment Support Allowance are eligible to receive free school meals. You will not qualify if you receive Working Tax Credits. Please ask at the office for further information.

The attendance award this week goes to Year 3 with 100% attendance. Well done!

Headteacher’s Award

This week the award goes to Year 4. I observed part of their ‘whole class brass’ lesson this week and they were producing some lovely sounds.  I was amazed and very proud of them. Well done all of you! I can’t wait to hear your first tune!

Dinner Ladies Awards

Well done to Phoebe Biggin and Ethan Lea, who received the Dinner Ladies awards this week.

Have a good weekend everyone. With luck the good weather will continue for a little while longer.

Dear Parents

Lost Coat

Before the holidays, a coat belonging to one of the nursery children went missing. It was not found and so could you please check again. It is Age 3/4, and has the name Lottie Cairns written in, over the top of the name Katie Cairns, so it is quite distinguishable. Please look for it again and if you have it, please return it to the Nursery or the Office. Thank you.

Grow-it tokens

Please note, we are collecting Grow-it tokens for Gardening equipment again. We are fortunate to have been able to buy lots of equipment and courtesy of Hemingfield Action Group, we will soon have a shed to store it all in. We would now like to collect for a large item (any ideas?)

Dear Parents

Welcome back to the new school year. I sincerely hope you had a good holiday. The children looked wonderful on Wednesday morning and have made a very positive start to the new term.

Reminders

The start of a new year is a good time to remind everyone of some of our school rules.

  • No jewellery is permitted, other than a watch and one pair of stud earrings. Children will be asked to remove any other jewellery and it will be kept in a safe place until the end of the school day.
  • Earrings must be removed for PE. If your child is unable to remove their own earrings, then please send her/him without them on PE days.
  • Long hair must be tied back.

  • All children, with the exception of Foundation Stage and Year One, must line up on the playground at the start of the day.
  • Foundation and Key Stage One children receive a fruit snack free of charge. No other snack is required. Key Stage Two children can buy fruit each morning for 20p per piece. Please note: crisps and chocolate snacks are not allowed.
